This week on Australian Wilderness with Ray Mears, Ray travels the length of Kangaroo Island, off Australia’s South Coast, described as the “wild jewel” in the continent’s crown. When the early explorers came to the island they found a land teeming with kangaroos and other species with no predators to harm them. Ray sets out to discover just how much of this original paradise is left. First, he comes across a sooty kangaroo, which is unique to Kangaroo Island, and then meets Paul Stanton, who has been farming on the island for 30 years. Ray learns how Paul lives in harmony with his kangaroo neighbours.

Echidnas aren't that rare, 300 hours before you find one? That's 8 weeks of full time searching, this guy loves drumming up a story.

I grew up on Kangaroo Island on a farm. Trust me, echidnas weren't that rare. Depending on where we were on the 360 acre farm we regularly saw them. Maybe not every day but then we weren't looking for them. Once I even saw 3 of them together which was extremely unusual. Occasionally we saw 2 in the same vicinity but usually just 1 at a time.

1/5th of the world's land mass? Google says world land mass is 148.94 million sq km. Australia is 7.692 million sq km. That's 1/19th point something. Not 1/5th.
