They are quite good headphones and work extremely smoothly. The price is comparable to any similar high-quality noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones. Of course you love them! I bought them immediately like many others (they ticked all the boxes for me) and I really love them. The voice assistant isn't too loud & there are no touch controls to accidentally trigger it. The transparency mode makes voices perfectly understandable. They are great when watching the Apple TV as well. They even adjust for my hearing loss (look in Settings/Accessibility/AudioVisual/Headphone Accommodations.)
It's too bad they are a must-hate for the Android crowd. Of course, like Samsung headphones, they work best with same-branded devices. 
I hope now that they've proven themselves, Apple will expand the line with less expensive, lighter, plastic waterproof versions. Just like AirPods, once people can get them on sale they will be everywhere.

There is no reason for them to be priced the way they are. I purchased a pair of MX3s for $300 and they were fantastic, until they were stolen. Not wanting to shell out that much money again I bought their baby brother the XB900s for $130, and honestly couldn't tell much of the difference. Yeah they are a step down in all ways but one (the XBs have a much longer battery life than the MXs, almost 3x.), You'd only tell if you are directly comparing the two. Also with ANC becoming so affordable that you can find passable (passable, not great) headset for $50 - $60, it makes charging $600 unacceptable. Especially for an everyday consumer. These headphones embody almost everything I've grown to hate about Apple.

Great review. I find that “Top Dollar” is really subjective. I believe that Apple has created its own niche, by developing next-level headphones that fit well into its ecosystem, and sit just below (perhaps a step and a half) true audiophile headphones which cost double, triple and more than the AirPods Max. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Good review Michael, one thing that occurs to me as purely an observation , the stretchy material that appears to act like a cushion from the two head band bars , I’m wondering if that is going to lose it’s elasticity after a while leaving the two bars resting on your cranium ?
It just does not seem like an ideal or premium solution for longevity , especially given the cost of these phones.
Happy to be proven wrong though.

So I ordered the AirPods Max and the famous Sony’s AND the Bose 700s. First I cant believe people actually like the Sony’s, they sound like artificial computer noise to me. The Sony 700s are so light and sound great but a little lacking on bass. I wanted so much to hate the apples but.... wtf? They are amazing. Sound is amazing and anc is game changing (and spatial audio is black magic for your ears, next level listening) Yes, better than the Bose and while I immediately sent back the Sony’s, I kept the Bose for it’s comfort and the apple for its sound. The one gripe though is that the earcups feel so rough, like denim sandpaper! I’m hoping third parties release softer earcups. Good job on the review!

After using the AirPods max for a little while, I’ve found a lot of the minor annoyances people brought up can actually be useful features. The case/no button I actually really like because it automatically pairs up with your phone the second it’s pulled out of the case(and goes to sleep when you put it in). It’s kind of like the regular AirPods with the little case. The battery drain is not bad at all. I wish there was a second case to go over the smart case/AirPods for travel, but at home(which is mostly where people will listen to them) they are great for quick music listening where you can simply pull the AirPods out of the smart case and quickly put them back in when you are done while also providing some level of scratch protection for the metal ear cups. Also I really enjoy the memory foam type ear cups for comfort and breathe-ability.
Ultimately I bought the AirPods max and the xm4s and spent time with both and can confidently say the AirPods max are much better, even though the sonys are still perfectly good anc headphones(I returned the Sony’s). The AirPods Max have better sound, noise cancelling, spatial audio, transparency(which is awful on sonys) and work well with the Apple ecosystem - which is especially important if you are already invested with an iPhone or Mac.

Though they're not Noise cancelling, my galaxy buds plus with extra high pass through mode enabled (for some reason you have to allow it in the settings) sound almost 1:1 with reality, and I can hear myself perfectly

I'm going to buy a pair any day now. Really debating between silver and space grey. Silver because my iPhone and Watch are gold, and Mac and iPad are Space grey so I would really like the contrast. But I'm worried that the mesh band might stain after awhile being so white. So my next choice would be space grey but I'm afraid scratches would be WAY more visible on the grey. I'm closer to pulling the trigger on the silver but would appreciate some feedback from someone whose had silver for awhile and their response to my worries.

I have several earbuds with transparency mode and, from the ones I've used, Apple's AirPods have the best true to life sound
I sometimes forget that I'm wearing them and they actually sometimes sound slightly better than my normal hearing
I haven't been able to get the brand new Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds to try out yet though

My biggest problem with these is that I would want the noise cancelling tech for commuting. AirPods Pro seem like they are more practical for most users while also being less than half the price. The sound quality is not even close between the two but for most times when noise cancelling is useful, practicality rates higher for me than the utmost sound quality.

Not a apple fan, but you do get what you pay for. Out of the things i do not like apple for, i do respect their quality and innovation.

To anyone thinking about purchasing these, I personally made it a goal to save up for these I have to say they’re 100% worth it. Don’t let the haters sway ur opinion. Yes the case isn’t optimal but it’s made out of leather and suede and smells like a new car so if I’m traveling with them it’s simple, just don’t throw them around and treat them like a $550 pair of headphones and wrap them in a sweatshirt of something if they’re going in a bag, def not a deal breaker at all. As for the power button, I thought I’d hate it not being there but lemme say this, I left them without the case on overnight and they only lost 3% battery so ya I don’t see the necessity with the amount of battery they have. Absolutely worth the price even though admittedly it’s very hard to swallow. Trust me, save up for em.

just got mine yesterday and I think their fantastic. $549 is a lot for a pair of headphones, I wish the audio quality was a tad better, but it's acceptable. I do enjoy them better then my beloved QC35 but I love the ear cups, I don't feel that they are squeezing my head, I agree with you that the transparency is insanely good and yes I wish there was a On-off button but you know what, the regular AirPods don't have it either to.. meh.
I'm happy with it, it's a great replacement for my QC's.

I still have my dongle from my iPhone X.

Forget the Airpods Max. The Drop + THX Pandas (which are on Amazon) are a much better value.

People have solved the standby issue by making 3rd party cases that put the headphones in standby or custom wallmounts that put the headphones on standby. The point is, people shouldn't have to do that.
Apple's idea of a user-friendly feature makes the users jump through a lot of extra hoops by doing things like make custom wallmounts.

I still find that wireless are inferior to most wired headphones (even at the same price bracket), in terms of sound quality. Just about time whether the technology would surpass the wired that most people won't care about sound quality anymore, or wired would be trendy again in the future because of its analog & superior sound quality.

Better to buy a SONY (a much superior) headphones than this airpod trash

Sadly the AirPods Max are a beta product, I'm returning mine as they are not loud enough unless you raise the volume at 80%+ and that's indoors... Imagine being outside, you would have to be at 100% all the time and that will probably be not loud enough.
Oh and at anything over 80% there's noticeable sound bleed. Any volume at 50% or less is just dead silent. Add the condensation to the mix, along with the lack of base and the price tag and yeah....
