I don't know anyone at all who has anything to do with VR, and they don't know people who use or have anything to do with VR. People, including me just have a hard enough time affording the basics in life, but V.R is still just an expensive toy. I'm waiting for it to die out all together and never hear of it again other than as an archive mentioned in third or forth gen VR nostalgia archives, which may well happen long after I'm dead.
A.K.A. VR as an every day item is probably never going to happen in my life time, other than for a privileged few who can throw money at toys like this, and a few businesses with money to spend.

I liked my Quest, even with the Facebook requirement. The only problem I had with it was the exclusion of a display port or hdmi port for native PCVR. I am really sensitive to image compression and no matter what I did, I could see it. $300 wifi 6 router set as an access point connected to pc via ethernet? Compression. Official link cable connected to a dedicated thunderbolt 3 pcie card? Compression. Wifi Direct to my pcie tri band wifi card? Blurry, ugly, distracting compression. I have even tried out friend's setups who claimed their setup was perfect, and I thought my original HTC Vive looked better.

I wish they would break up Facebook. I absolutely hate that company! And although I really love the Quest 2, the Facebook requirement is a deal breaker for me. If they would remove the requirement, then I would join the craze. But if Facebooks answer is no, then mine is as well.

I'm new to VR but not sure what to get. I had a Quest 2 for a week recently and was very unimpressed. The image was extremely blurry and fuzzy. I tried adjusting the elite strap, IPD adjustments, Sidequest texture res option, oculus app resolution option, but all content from native to Oculus Link on the PC was the same, like watching a sub 720p image on a 60 inch screen. Or just a very compressed or low res video stream look. I hadn't tried dev mode because I didn't know about it at the time. Might dev mode have solved the issue? Debating on potentially wasting time trying another unit. I would be playing PC VR content a lot more than native.

I Will take any competitor to facebook that isn't a company under a regime currently commiting genocide.

I think there will be a bit of misconception about the Quest sales, it might be the best selling but all the 5 people i know that has one use it with wireless desktop to play high end games for cheaps mainly, and are not interested in the low graphics games

Facebook made its money in VR because it was cheap and they were first... once competition comes out they will bend or break.

facebook login is definitely going away. I have absolutely no doubt about that. the only reason(s) people buy the quest 2 despite this terrible tactic currently is because apart from the fb login, they make an incredibly cheap product for the amazing specs they offer. currently absolutely number 1 on the market for the price. as soon as the competition stops sitting on their asses, they will lose their market leader position. if the consumer can choose between 2 more or less identical headsets, one with and one without a facebook login requirement, who exactly will still go for the facebook one? exactly, nobody. and since you can play all their games with other headsets too, that also won't be a factor. the only thing they could really do here is restrict access to their games and truly make them occulus exclusive. otherwise, their 1984 tactics are numbered.
i am always amazed by the terrible decisions some ceo's make. this is a complete no-brainer. yes, data is very valuable but they are absolutely gonna lose their position in the market once the competition rolls up. i am so sure of that, i'm gonna bet against facebook on the stock market once I feel the competition has arrived. this could have been an opportunity where they could have moved away from their (deservably) horrible image and become one of or even the best vr company in the world. but no, they rather continue with forcing people to give up their data for the few months / years they have left. i have no idea how some people got into the positions they find themselves in.

I have 4 oculus rift s and 2 quest.
2 of the rift have been replaced by valve indexes, gotta replace another soon (these are my kids rigs and they do not and will not use Facebook). My rift is fine I have Facebook but don’t use it for anything anymore.
This VR is getting expensive 😂.

I'm shopping around for a good VR set for my sim rig. Oculus is out of the question. I refuse to make a FB account just to play gam4es. If you get kicked off FB then you lose all your content that you paid for? No thanks. I would gladly give my money to another brand.

As someone who deals with intermittent anxiety, I love VR because of its ability to completely take my attention off my worries while I'm using it. Being able to get that kind of break is just fantastic.

Just want to point out that the Guardian is a form of Point Data software. other industry's use that to 3D model with Cameras instead of doing it traditionally with 3d Software like Maya, Blender or 3D MAX. Facebook owns Quest and is know to sell personal information for marketing data.. Just be aware you might be sending them 3D models of your gaming area.

I don't use Facebook at all... profile is blank.
I only use virtual desktop and Steam VR.

Earlier you mentioned it doesnt cost that much to manufacture while your right, it takes time, labor hours, and loss of profit from focusing on high profit items to switch production on a less demanding item. That loss of profit is really where they push the price on these items.
The reason they dont just refuse to produce these items is obviously one day demand could shift more heavily to these less produced items, shilling for high market items will eventually fade and ruin a buisness.

not sure if light field tech applies to VR. That focus is done in 3D with some eye tracking. In AR, light field can be used to generate depth map and mask objects based on that for better compositing. ie. you would move a VR cube behind a real vase and the AR would be correct with the cube masked behind the vase. the 1000x1000 grid i suppose is eye tracking based on light field technology, and not light field as we know it (which should be in the AR cameras).

What I'd love to see is a controller/haptic glove hybrid. You could put your hand through the tracking ring and into a glove, which suspends the tracking ring with elastic bands the same way a microphone shock mount would. The actual controller would be attached to the tracking ring so that it hovers in front of your gloved hands. This way the functions of the controller are constantly in reach, but you can have the full range of motion + haptic feedback of gloves without dropping the controller.
