In today's video, Sootch walks through the advantages and disadvantages of 5 types of guns you need in a SHTF situation.
1. Go-To Rifle - This is the gun you use to defend your home in a grid-down situation.
2. Long-Range - If you live in an area with wide open spaces, a gun with long-range is the way to go.
3. Shotgun - This gun is limited in range and round capacity, but is a very effective tool for home defense.
4. Handgun - This personal defense tool is a necessary gun for your arsenal.
5. 22 Rimfire - This compact, easy-to-use rifle has cheap ammo and is a great option to round out your arsenal.

man those classic ar15 round handguards are disgusting
jwgbmp40
Actually... guns and ammo magazine did a 9mm/5.56 both 16" barrels, test on penetration oh gosh I think about 10 yrs ago, and the 9 in 16" penetrated a lot more than the 556.. due to bullet weight and higher 9 velocity from a 16"..
Doug Earnest
The best feature of the AR-15 is you can easily cut the weight in half by removing all the attachments.
Ordoabchaos
Strangest thing. I have a steyr AUG that me and a couple guys shot in an old drilling rig house on my property that had two interior walls and 4 sets of lockers and the house being made of steel like a storage container. The 16" barrel .556 out of the AUG penetrated 4 lockers and two interior walls but failed to exit the building. My 9mm jericho 941 with basic ball ammo went through lockers walls and exited the building which surprised me alot.

The bottom line of the US being awash with guns is that it has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
Ask my daughter who is an Emergency Room doctor in Madison WI about the benefits of gun ownership.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval addressed his concern over the city's growing number of gun-related violent incidents this month calling the trend “increasingly disturbing.”
Koval said that since January, there have been 28 separate instances of gunshots fired in the city and around 16 to 17 alone in February.
“We are seeing too much violence associated with guns,” Koval said at a press conference, saying that “we’re enamored with the … culture of gun violence.”
Robert Mc Dowell
What?! I don't see the NAA .22mg revolver or the Ruger 22lr rifle? Just kidding, but I'm small and old and I feel comfortable with those weapons
Sifu .

AR upper chassis in 6.5 Grendel, great long range round. Stock it deepish 2k rounds and keep the 5.56 deep

Lever action wouldn’t even be in my top 5

Ha ha ha you need to watch tbis again ammo us cheep Ha ha

The .22 rifle is a much needed inventory item. If you are hunting small game like squirrel or rabbit a .308 round should be saved for larger game. Plus you want to take the squirrel down, not blow it up.
In a SHTF situation and you a hunting small game the smaller report of the .22 won't bring unwanted attention. With a .308 predatory people know you are near, have a valuable gun and ammunition while you don't know they are near. So now you become the hunted as they track you down and ambush you.
edward cnnell
The .22 pistol is a needed inventory item. It has light recoil making practice far less tiring.
It's ammunition is inexpensive making practice so affordable that you
can fire 100 rounds are more and not have to give up meals.
All this affordable practice form the baseline of your skills. Sighting, trigger pull and
compensation for bullet drop are right here. Then practice with your
heavier caliber pistol so you just have to compensate for the recoil
and it's bullet drop. Most pistol firing is short range and bullet
drop not a major factor.

You might want to check out the Remington SPS SHUR SHOT, Super Slug 12 gauge, scoped it's a 200 yard shotgun, pinned 25.5 inch rifled barrel, how bout it

Not with ammo shortage now

if shtf, you'd best not be out and about in daylight, or you'll get shot. you need a night vision goggle, night sight, passive IR scanner, solar and Biolite stove chargers, recharageble batteries a silenced autorifle, a subsonic ammo option, concealable armor, and enough brains to stay underground during daylight hours. This will enhance your survivability by a factor of 10, at the very least. No type of night vision offers longer ranges than the shorty AR offers, and the .22lr conversion unit offers the 60 gr Aquila subsonic 22 for braining men, deer, dogs, hogs to 50m. At night, that's enough range and such 22's are 100 rds to the lb. No gun is of any value once you're out of ammo and even if you're just low on ammo, you'd better not start anything, unless you're assured of your ambush resulting in guns and ammo to be picked up from dead enemies.
Dr. Who
CZ RAMI 2075....check it out. Really enjoy mine. Sub compact with steel frame. Soft 9mm recoil. Enjoyable to shoot at the range and used as an EDC.

You would be surprised, if and when the SHTF in CA, how many of these illegal guns will surface.
Wasted TF2
I wish I had a ar10 man those are sweet but so expensive. 308 ammo is so hard to get right now it is sad.

Remember Joe Biden's first piece of firearms advice, "If you hear someone trying to break in, open the balcony door and fire off both barrels from a shotgun". Well, even assuming you don't put a load of buckshot through your neighbor's window, you'll be facing charges for discharging a firearm within city limits (Joe is NOT a country lad).
Then, there's his advice to LEO's, "Don't shoot them in the chest! If you have to fire a round, shoot them in the leg!" Obviously, he is not in tune with the current courtroom practice of prosecutors who believe that if you have enough control of the situation to deliberately shoot someone in the leg, you didn't need to shoot him at all. Not to mention the whole liability issue of negligent homicide if you clip his artery . . .. . just plain damned foolishness. But, what do you expect from someone who thinks a semi-auto AR in .223 is an Assault Rifle?
Serria Fonesca
The best advice is getting your guns and more From *Herickcard* on telegram he's the best plug ever liveth..

I got my guns delivered to my address safely from hericard on telegram he’s the best vendor I’ve ever deal with ..

I like my Ruger Mini 14 paratrooper. It collapses down to a pistol sized rifle and is reliable, and it runs the same ammo as my M-4 carbine.
lgriff1968
Bugged in here and for the terrain - 12ga shotgun w/28" bbl & changeable chokes, 22lr rifle, pistol cal. lever action 20" bbl rifle and two handguns of same cal.. Lets see, that's five right, yeah right okay, that's it for me.
Captain J The BK
I like the idea of a lever gun but it definitely has to be something that has a side loading gate. No one wants to pull a mag tube and drop rounds in during a gunfight.
rhinely850
Best combo is a Ruger PC Carbine with Glock mag and a Glock handgun models 17, 19, or 45 all in 9mm. Same mags as PC Carbine.
Michael Smith
When the shif we need the military arsenal.
Jp Monin
In my opinion. A semi auto pistol and semi auto rifle are needed as a basic minimum
frenchfry farmer
An AR pistol you can carry loaded in your vehicle on the dash or hidden. You cannot do that with any long gun. ...legally
David
My SHTF blaster is an 11.5 from triarc systems.
Reason being. If its an actual SHTF WROL or what not im doubtful Id have to take shots farther than 300. Most engagements would be quick and violent at a short distance.
Just my 2 cents
Henry Jiang
IMO for SHTF/Survival
You need:
AR 15 for all around combat and hunting
pistol 9mm for close range and secondary
a crossbow (silent and ammo shortage and hunting)
a knife
The Bardock
Im just trying to find another gun because all the common ammo is out of stock now lol might go by something in a 50bmg or 410 shotgun 😆
Mike Kool
300 blackout is the one of the coolest assault rifle round
Kristine Jackson
The Rugers are best never fail and made in the USA cant go wrong
archangel20031
Battlefield pick ups, as if after the firefight you can roam around the battlefield and shop for an additional gun and grab piles of matching ammo just laying around.
Shots might be exchanged, that is if you don't just duck out and RUN LIKE HELL, like you should!
archangel20031
Seriously, most, and I mean like 90% of those who will end up using an AR-15 or an AK variant in a SHTF will never need to reach out more than 100 to 150 yards, and all too many can barely hit at that range even sitting relaxed and propped up on a shooting bench.
Hell, I bet 75% of those owners rarely if ever go to the range after they first buy it!
Mechanically Musical
My idea of well prepared is a short pump 12 gauge shotgun a range capable lever action rifle and a glock 33 If I can acquire those 3 I think that covers 99% of firearms applications in a SHTF scenario
Jim
Got all these plus a reliable takedown recurve bow. Packs up small and obviously completely silent. The ammo is often re usable too ;)
Mike A
Tht wood stock on that A.R is the coolest one ive ever seen sir. Hi from canada good video
Rotwang72
I guess my two issues with this kind of “prepping” 1) To be really effective it requires extensive training, time, and money. You could get killed by someone with situational advantage really easily and you will have wasted your pre SHTF time and money training only to die by chance. 2) you are prepping to kill other Americans instead of prepping to help them. Seems unpatriotic by definition.
Rotwang72
@Not Anymore it would be easier to say you are cuckoo for coal puffs thant to have typed your last response. I have no idea who CCP is and I ain't paid. Sorry if you don't like the logic. This idea od "defending" your family IS planning to kill other Americans in a time of need. Its odd how prepping is rarely about getting ready to help everyone in your community, it is mostly about readying to kill your community over a cowardice.
Not Anymore
@Rotwang72 you obviously don’t or you are a paid CCP troll. This isn’t about killing other Americans. It’s about being able to defend your family and community if shit goes down. At this point there are radical anarchists that have threatened to “go out into the suburbs” to cause chaos and already have been causing chaos in the feral cities of the PNW.
Rotwang72
@Not Anymore Or you don't.
Not Anymore
You don’t understand the situation

you call yourself a prepper but dont even have a rear sight on your AR in case your optic fails

The Pacific NW is so forested I would have a hard time finding a spot to shoot over 100 yards without hitting trees
Elaine K
I need training in shooting and what kind of gun I would need for my experience level. I have zero experience. I don't own a gun. What do I need for when SHTF? I don't even know the gun language. I work in Ohio and sometimes in California.
Heinz Franzen
a PCC have more Penetration than most rifle calibers.
Eddy
500 to 1000 yards? Havent you heard the old saying. Dont fire until you see the whites of their eyes ! Lol
I can't even see 1000 yards.
Great vid. I'm a ar guy and the m 16 is great, now! I think the military's requirements is that it is optimal at 500 yards, the rifles ability to stop the offender . Been awhile.
butler
Mr. Guns N Gear: "The least likely to over-penetrate is a rifle round. This is absolute fact. It's not a debate. It's absolutely true."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL1s3twUA4o&t=13m40s
Sootch, you are just plain wrong about overpenetration. @4:50 "I think that the 5.56 is a great option. But, it can over-penetrate. Whereas a 9mm, you know, it's going to have less penetration. So if you're in a high-density area, possibly, a pistol caliber carbine might be better."
"Statements are made that the shotgun or pistol should be used because of the over-penetration problem with 5.56 carbine ammunition. This could not be further from the truth. If you conduct a little research you will find that numerous law enforcement departments, to include the FBI, have proven this to be false in most cases. The fact of the matter is that many of these bullets will penetrate numerous walls, but standard 5.56 loadings are the least of your worries when compared to pistol and shotgun fodder, which continue to take top honors in the category of over-penetration." US Army Sergeant Major Lamb (former Delta/CAG)
https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2015/5/26/the-ar-for-home-defense-one-experts-opinion
"Common pistol rounds easily penetrated all 4 walls spaced out at room distances. This is a critical issue. Think about the inside of your house and imagine if you shot through 4 walls. Could you hit a loved one? Know your target and what is behind it....The 5.56 rounds deviated greatly from the original flight path once they started tumbling. This occurred after the second wall." Old_Painless (certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Personal Firearms Defense, and Home Firearms Safety Instructor)
http://www.theboxotruth.com/the-box-o-truth-12-insulated-walls/
"Proponents of the pistol for home defense like to think that because it’s 'just' a pistol round, overpenetration really won’t be an issue. Such is not the case. Drywall sheets and hollow-core doors (which are what you’ll find in the majority of homes and apartments in this country) offer almost no resistance to bullets....For years many people just assumed they knew what would happen to a rifle bullet fired indoors—it would go through every wall available and then exit the building. While armor-piercing and FMJ ammunition is specifically designed to do this, extensive testing has shown that light, extremely fast-moving .223 projectiles (including FMJs) often fragment when they hit a barrier as soft as thin plywood." James Tarr (former police officer; contributing editor for Guns and Ammo)
http://www.gunsandammo.com/ammo/long-guns-short-yardage-is-223-the-best-home-defense-caliber/
"The .223/5.56 is moving at around 3,000 feet per second, and while it isn’t magic bullet, it’s a far cry better than any pistol round. Another advantage of the .223/5.56 is its limited penetration. The shape and velocity of the round cause it to immediately expend or dissipate its energy once it strikes something." Tiger McKee (adjunct instructor at Thunder Ranch)
https://gundigest.com/reviews/ar-15-ideal-home-defense-guns
"The pistol rounds were seemingly unaffected by the drywall and/or wood barriers. There was no observable deviation or fragmentation of the 9mm projectiles. You’d be safe counting on a pistol round to keep going, and going, and going. After all, premium pistol ammunition is designed to expand, and lose energy, when striking liquid-based targets—not walls. The full metal jacket .223 rounds tended to tumble rather than break apart when they encountered barriers." Tom McHale (contributor at AmmoLand and OutdoorHub)
http://www.outdoorhub.com/stories/2013/11/04/ar-15-appropriate-home-defense-part-one-penetration-issues/
"FBI and Independent Testing Has Consistently Shown .223/5.56 NATO Fired From AR-15’s Do Not Over Penetrate More Than Pistol/Shotgun." Caleb Lee (NRA Certified Basic Pistol & Personal Protection Inside The Home Instructor)
http://preparedgunowners.com/2016/07/14/why-high-powered-5-56-nato-223-ar-15-ammo-is-safer-for-home-defense-fbi-overpenetration-testing/
"Since all of the 5.56 mm/.223 bullets fired through the interior wall had significantly less penetration than 9 mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 12 ga. shotgun projectiles which were fired through an interior wall, stray 5.56 mm/.223 bullets seem to offer a reduced risk of injuring innocent bystanders and an inherent reduced risk of civil litigation in situations where bullets miss their intended target and enter or exit structures. As such, 5.56mm/.223 caliber weapons may be safer to use in CQB situations and crowded urban environments than service caliber handguns or 12 ga. weapons." Dr. Gary Williams (ballistics expert)

Everyone says the 22lr is not good enough to stop a threat, and sure of course. But I've never heard of a news report saying "Fortunately his injuries are non life threatening because he was only shot with a 22"

I believe shouldering an AR pistol is a felony

Won’t it be really hard to carry 4 long guns and all the different ammo?
wolftng359
Bought my first “assault rifle” today. 😂 and a 9mm. “God bless America. Long live the Republic”
Josh Mitt
@wolftng359 That's great! Its a shame so many people dont get the same upbringing around firearms (im pretty similar to you that respect/life long hunter). After observing folks at public ranges ive seen a lot of things from just embarrassing themselves trying play cowboy, to dangerous things like pistol twerling, and shooting while people are down range! I wasny trying to assume you didn't know what you're doing, sorry bud haha, its just a friendly tip in case you didnt... cause well... unfortunately its necessary sometimes... lol Welcome! All the same!
wolftng359
Thanks brother. Not my first gun but first AR and 9mm I’ve ever bought. Been shooting since I was a kid. Plinking with 22 rifle then 20 gauge. I thank god I had parents who actually taught their children respect for and safety around guns.
Josh Mitt
Congrats! But please train on it! I dont know how much training/education you've had with firearms, and maybe you are already an expert in which case i apologize, but i have seen/almost been accidentally shot by "first time" gun buyers at shooting ranges... so please dont give the politicians an example to use! But... WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY!!! WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO WELCOME NEW BROTHERS & SISTERS! :)

What was number 2 again? The .223/5.56 is long range; I'm not shooting anything more than 300 yards out

AK-47’s Jam more than an AR on any given day. They are nothing but pieces of Trash thrown together by slave labor.

Ammo fairly inexpensive. LOL

Hard just to pick 1 firearm when u love all of them

A good idea is using a 22 with a suppressor in conjunction. Shooting would be as quiet as it is in the movies.

Ruger PC9 Carbine with 33 Rnd happy sticks, 9mm Pistols. In the Bug out Truck is the Long Range .223 Prairie Rat Popper, and the .300 Win Mag Truck Killer. Piled in the back are a bunch of Shotguns, from .410's to 12G. A bunch of .22 rifles and pistols Just in case the Starving Snowflake haven't eaten everything crawling just quite yet. Or can also be used as trade goods when the GunTards eventually change their minds...

Lever actions are great for me in the uk we can’t have semi autos (except for rim fire) so a .357/.44 lever action is a really good replacement especially a tactical one with picitiny rails etc

That 45 lbs includes just 6 lbs of water and 2 lbs of pemmican. You dont need food the first or last day of hard pushing, and a lb of pemmican per day is enough (for a month or so, if you're carrying a bit of "padding", as almost all US men ARE)/ You'll still lose almost a lb of bodyweight per day. In 4 days, tho, I'll find or forage something to eat. Or I can hole up and last another 3 weeks just on my bodyfat, since I wont be doing much of anything. if you anticipate needing more gear, food, time or distance, best get a bicycle to carry the weight. You can walk alongside of a bicycle, with 20 lbs on your back, your rifle spring-clamped across your handlebars and push 100 lbs thru some pretty bad terrain and pedal with all of it, on back roads, at night, if it's not uphills. you might need for 20 lbs of that to be in inflatable boat and 15 lbs more of it to be water, but that still leaves 40 lbs of pemmican. You can easily pedal at least 50 miles per night on back roads, altho you might only cover 10 miles per night off road. Figure 25 miles per night average and 49 yo lbs of pemmican lets you travel 1000 miles. Youll find a cow, horse, hog, sheep, etc in that time and distance. So have some salt to help you preserve it.
bali song
nope, just 3. A 10.5' barreled 223 AR, with a silencer abd .22lr conversion unit. A very much re-worked M21 Beretta .22lr pocket auto, with sights, extactor, SA-only, Taurus PT22 mag fitted, groups 2" at 25m, and a Sig P938 pocket 9mm. The pistols are 15 ozs each, to include the .22 silencer. The AR is 6 lbs, the .22 unit and silencer are 3/4 lb each ,the night scope is a lb and so is the day scope. 11.5 lbs of guns, and 2.5 lbs of ammo. given that there's another 4 lbs of nigh vision, helmet upon which to mount is, solar charger, passive IR scanner, and 5 lbs of soft armor, and 22 lbs of clothing, shelter/sleep gear tools, packs, water, food, survival gear, trekking poles, med-kit, you'll find OUT that 14 lbs of guns and ammo is a LOT So you will not also be carrying a shotgun, .22 rifle, lots of centerfire pistol ammo, etc, and you can't shoot what you aint got with you. Also, there will be no safe place to leave anything and neither men or animals will wait while you go GET "the right gun for the job".
Michael McBroom
For .308, don't leave out bolt guns! Great long-rangers. Anyway, my SHTF list: CZ75, AR-15, .308 bolt gun, Ruger 10-22, 12 ga. pump.
Larry Powell
M and P 40 cal and AR15, my personal load out! Lots of range as well...
Agent Jon Burrows
6.5 Creedmore; 20 gauge shotgun; 357 lever action; .357 revolver; Walther PPK pistol are what I got.

What scope was that on your st.edge?

AK DOES NEVER NEED FIXING UP....... NEVER!!!!!!

Ruger mark IV. Very accurate, cheap + easy ammo to carry, EASY cleaning (no tools needed to break down), good for small game. You can just have one ready to go on your bug out bag and not have to take up so much space for cleaning/ammo/supplies. It's pretty reliable too from my experience. Also comes suppressor ready if you're into that
A Spit of Mud
I think the 22 rifle will be the rifle that feeds me. Its quiet and won't be ringing the dinner bell for every zombie for miles around.

Just picked up a Ruger AR 556 $600 at Gander Mountain in Ocala Florida and a Remington 870 super mag 👍 Plus I’ve got my trusty Glock 19 with extended magazines I think I’m ready to kick coronavirus ass
Chris H
Looks like a 870 wingmaster? That's what I grew up on. Love that thing and all the memories with my dad hunting grouse and pheasant. Just picked another one up about a month ago. Have everything including a lever action 30-30. Saving up to get a .308 platform or something for long range, big game capability.
SkylineZ
Lol a lever gun? How 1700 muskets?
rmwtsou
The Henry lever-action rifle that you showed at 3:34 is good; however, it lacks a side-loading gate. Personally, I would choose a Rossi R92 (a Winchester 1892 clone) in .357/.38 with a 16" barrel. It is short, light, handy, fast-cycling, no jams and most important, you can quickly and easily top off rounds into the tubular magazine as you shoot. All you need is to have a pocketful of .357 or .38 cartridges.
William Wilhite
Ar and ak ammo will be plentiful.
William Wilhite
22 Magnum pistol and rifle. Same ammo and you can carry a lot of ammo.
William Wilhite
You can get the ar10 in pistol.

I just thought id mention this. I always hear people saying with a shotgun even with slugs you're looking at 100 yards or within. But aren't the bead sights set at 100 off the rack? I know slugs will get well past 100 if you do your part but just curious on others opinions.
Michael Newkirk
A shotgun slug will change a few minds of the home invaders.
rccdelmte
Or he can have choices because this is America.
H. C.
@Dusty Cover if you're waiting to chamber the shotgun till the intruder can hear it you are the one who's likely to get shot. Besides an ar15 is better in mag capacity, ease of use and it's easier to stay on target. Ar-15 is also loud so it also has the 'intimidation' factor you are looking for
Rotwang72
@Dusty Cover that’s kind of a myth.
Dusty Cover
@bali song it will still get the job done and most of the time you don't have to use it. The sound of a shotgun being cocked is enough to scare off a intruder.
bali song
the shotgun is no help if you need slugs. We all know that you dont practice much with $1 a shot slugs. you go with the shotgun cause you're counting on he buckshot pattern to cover for your lack of skill. With no choke, it wont reliably do that beyond 30m, or 20m vs cover users. That much "range' is not woth bothering with. You want a silnecer on a shorty AR-15 and a .22lr conversion unit. It's $170, from CMMG, 3/4 lb, caliber swap takes 10 seconds. This lets you practice 5x as much for the same money, on inddoor ranges where the shotgun or hi-v rifles are not welcome. The silencer makes the full power 223 rds every BIT as "tame" to use as is the .22 unit (wihout the silencer) with 1 in 9" rifling twist, you can use the 60 gr Aquila subsonic ammo, which reiiably works the action and feeds from box mags. This lets you brain men, dogs, hogs, deer to 50m. If you know to fire left handed and use your right hand to hold shut the bolt, it'll be BB gun quiet. The shotgun is very noisy, with a huge flash at night, and can't be effectively silenced. Buckshot wont pierce soft armor, or even a windshield or car door at 10m or more, espeically if the angle of impact is not a perfect 90 degrees. It also wont pierce a tire, so the tire is cover from buckshot. The 12 ga ammo is heavy, bulky, awkward to carry, slow to reload nd it's fragile, too.
Beau Blumhardt
This is a little unrealistic because most people will have hunting rifles and shotguns not AR’s

“Beware of the man with one gun..”
Perpetual Confusion
I only have a Mini 14 :)
Device Detective
A Ruger 10/22 Tactical takedown model, with BX25 magazines, An SR22 or Mark IV Lite, and about 1000 rounds of 22lr is more than enough to take on every task from assault, defense, hunting, silenced combat, bugging out, bugging in, bugging out, etc. If it's SHTF, any wound is going to be fatal with no medical care and good shot placement. And you can keep shooting while opponents may not be able to continue firing. You get much more practice with 22, you can stock much more ammo, you become a much better shot and anyone can shoot a 22lr, including the elderly, your spouse and your children.

I hope my wife never sees this. I have *way* more than 5.
